A Tale Of Two Worlds

By Connor Lang

Editors Note:  This story is Part I of a series on immigrant and refugee students.

Lowell, MA- Imagine being set in a new life. Distant from your past of ease and wealth, you have been placed in the dead center of a world unfamiliar and aggravating.

Phuc (She prefers Phie) Nguyen is an immigrant student who has thrived academically at LHS.  Phie is a funny, hardworking, and understanding individual. She speaks of her life in Vietnam. A good job, an advanced education, and plans for the future. Not persecution, not lack of schooling and not poverty.

“I grew up in a middle class family and I was really upset when my mother decided to move our family to the United States,” says Phie about the move to a new country.

In Vietnan Phie’s family had money and a strong backbone, her mother. Her mother kept the family together and always provided emotional and family support. Phie doesn’t exactly know why her mother wanted her family to come to the U.S. The lives that they would leave behind were just so great.

“It was so great in Vietnam. My job, my life, my everything. I don’t know why my mother wanted us to move here,” Phie Explains.

In Vietnam, Phie would have liked to study and become a lawyer because of her skilled thinking and generally sassy ways. But now, she feels as if her english speaking skills don’t even compare to her Vietnamese. Thus, her dream of becoming a lawyer may be broken. The medical field is an option now, the path loved by every parent. But, is it really what Phie wants to do with her life?

Phie tells of Vietnam, beautiful and peaceful compared to crumby ole’ Lowell, Massachusetts. She hides it well, but moving to America was a huge step backward. 12th grade classes had been taught in the 6th grade. Working at a local mall was almost fun. The only downside seemed to be not having as much time to hangout. But, Phie describes her experiences as nearly ideal. The U.S had seemed like uninhabitable lands and Phie couldn’t come to terms on why her mother was making her move while they had currently been living semi-perfect lives.

Now that you know a little bit about Phie, and maybe even have a better understanding of her life than me, but here’s the breakdown of her story. Phie is like a character in the wrong book, a prodigy of the wrong calling, a player of the wrong sport. She doesn’t show it, but she may be trapped in the wrong life.

SENIOR PROM 2016: Dos and Don’ts

By Chanmony Chap

Lowell, MA-  Spring semester is here, and that means prom is already in the air.

Hello Seniors wake up! Prom is one of the few times in your semi-adult life you get to wear an elegant gown or a swift looking tux. So, take advantage of it. This is your moment to shine.

Here are the dos and don’ts for attending the prom in style.

DO look poppin’

Prom is your time to look poppin’ and do it up.

Girls: get your makeup done by a professional– but make sure you do a trial run first. If you’re going to do your hair and makeup yourself, try it out a few times before the actual prom. YouTube/Instagram is a great place to find those tutorials for awesome hair and makeup looks!

Boys: get a fresh cut the day before or even the day of. Try to think about how you want to “wow” the girls whom you probably won’t see again.

DO buy your outfit way in advance

Girls: It’s great to buy a dress in advance so that no other girl will have the same dress. It is important to make sure it fits you perfectly. Boys: make sure you go to the right place to get a perfect suit/tux. So make sure you get it fixed and tailored to your liking! For girls who do not have the opportunity to go out and get a dress, they can get one from C-House where generous ladies have donated their dresses.

DO wear comfy shoes

Girls: You may be reaching for the five inch stilettos, but trust me your feet will thank you if you go with something a little more comfortable.  Three inch should suffice.

Boys: Wear a classy casual shoe. Ya’ll might need a few inches bumped because your girl will be stiltin’ over you in her heals.

DO take pictures!

Girls and Boys: Make sure you have time to get some good pictures with families, friends and teachers.

DON’T show too much skin

Girls: If you’re going to go short with your dress,  be sure it’s not too short! First of all, everyone’s at prom—other parents, teachers—so make sure your dress isn’t too scandalous.  Anyway, you don’t want to be pulling it down the whole night, especially not while you’re dancing.

Boys: Keep that button down shirt on, no one wants to see you drenched in sweat.

DON’T forget

Boys and Girls:  Don’t forget your date’s corsage or boutonniere!  Those are the flowers by the way.   It’s important to order these from a local florist so you can pick them up easily.  Order them ahead of time too.  Oh, and make sure the flower color compliments your date’s outfit.  We don’t want any color mismatch disasters!

DON’t show up late!

Boys and Girls:  If you’re planning to sit with friends or get a good table, don’t show up late.  Despite what some might suggest, you don’t want miss anything!

Why read the Communist Manifesto?

By Steven Ducheneau

With many different views in the world, people tend to be hostile towards those that don’t go with their view, even without really knowing what those views entail. In America there is a long history of this, including the cold war, the wars in South-East Asia, and the rise of Joseph McCarthy being against communism. In more modern times there is also a hatred and distrust of Islam, with many condemning it and all its followers for the actions of some, as shown in Texas when a peaceful rally to promote religious tolerance was disrupted by a group of Christian protesters claiming Texas would stand against Islam.

In both cases, ignorance of the actual ideas of the ideologies causes much of the fear. It is important to see the merit of different ideas, and the merits of your own ideas, for various reasons, such as better understanding within a society towards different groups, personal betterment, and justice for those who are of a minority ideology.

If someone in this country was asked about what they thought of communism, they would likely have a fairly negative response. But if the same person was asked about what they knew about it, they would usually be able to say ‘it’s bad and Russia was communist.’ but not much else. The idea I’m getting at is that in most of this country people are trained to hate communism and discouraged from looking into the ideology. This way of thinking about ‘foreign’ ideologies causes many to be close minded and and hostile towards those who identify with the idea.

Now how does one get out of the mindset of their ideas being the only right and all others being hostile? The best way would to be to look into works relating to a different idea, such as if you’re a capitalist look into The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx, or if you’re a communist look into the writings like Andrew Carnegie’s Gospel of Wealth. The same goes for religion, Christians would read the Quran, the works of Confucius, and followers of other religions do similar.

Another important thing to note is to look into your own ideology. Many think that their beliefs are proper and true yet have a superficial understanding or not looked into them.  They adopt their ideology by following their family or the crowd, many indoctrinated when they are young or in moments of weakness.  One should be able to defend their beliefs.
Now, not all people hate things for no reason or even when they have reason. Many are more versed in the merits of differing ideologies and know what they are about and why they have traction. One such person, Megan Lopes, feels that when it’s done right it can be beneficial. She is one of many who knows more than just the fact that it exists and knows some of its parts. Although the ‘many’ are unfortunately small in number, they are growing due to things like the internet and more social acceptance of varied ideas.

So, I encourage everyone to explore ideas different from his or her own.  And people should be certain to understand their own beliefs.
